You\u2019ll find it in our dances, songs, crafts, and how we act to one another. We\u2019re the last Polynesian kingdom, and that means our culture runs deep.<\/p>\n<p>Take time to learn a little. Try a few words in Tongan. Watch a traditional dance. Ask about our stories. No loud music, no swimming at the beach, and no work \u2013 not even grocery shopping. It\u2019s a time for church, family, and the world\u2019s best naps.<\/p>\n<p>We get that it might feel super quiet, but lean into it. Walk slowly, read a book, take a break from rushing.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday is when we recharge \u2013 spiritually and with family, If you&#8217;re not resting, you&#8217;re doing it wrong.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Family Is Everything<\/h2>\n<p>We don\u2019t do nuclear families here. It\u2019s big families, extended families, cousins of cousins, and everyone\u2019s auntie. And when you\u2019re here, don\u2019t be surprised if we treat you like part of the crew too.<\/p>\n<p>We will feed you, laugh with you, and probably ask you where your family is from,<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of which\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Yes, Food Is Our Love Language<\/h2>\n<p>Every Tongan gathering \u2013 birthday, wedding, church, even just Sunday lunch \u2013 means tables of food. Like, more food than you think is physically possible.<\/p>\n<p>Eating is caring. If you\u2019re at a Tongan function, expect to be fed\u2026 and then fed again. We love joking around \u2013 about anything and everything. We tease each other, we laugh until we cry, and yes, you might hear us before you see us.<\/p>\n<p>Jokes are our way of making people feel comfortable. So if we\u2019re laughing with you \u2013 that\u2019s a good thing. Roll with it, and maybe throw a joke back!<\/p>\n<p>English? Yes. Speed-Talking? Not So Much.<br \/>Yes, we speak English. But if you talk like a caffeinated auctioneer, we might blink a few times before answering. Slow it down and we\u2019ll be best friends.<\/p>\n<p>Also:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No, we do not magically understand Samoan but we can pick it up quickly. Same way English speakers don\u2019t automatically understand French.<\/li>\n<li>Yes, we travel, but usually to where our families live (shoutout to Sydney, Auckland, and San Francisco).<\/li>\n<li>Yes, we definitely believe our coconuts, mangos, pineapples, and bananas are the best in the world. Breathe.
